Monitoring
Monitoring in Life Backup Plan is designed to support a wide range of real-world healthcare and safety use cases, from post-discharge monitoring for hospitals and surgeons, to home healthcare, wound care, concierge medicine, and everyday independent living. Rather than relying on a single sensor or device-specific alert, the platform centers on intentional, user-defined check-ons that can be tailored to clinical protocols, care plans, or personal routines.
At the core of this capability is the ability to schedule an unlimited number of daily check-ons. If a scheduled check-on is missed, the system assumes assistance may be needed and begins a structured outreach process, attempting to reach the user multiple times at defined intervals before escalating notifications to designated emergency contacts. This model supports early detection of potential illness or emergencies, enables timely response, and integrates location awareness and geofencing where appropriate to provide additional context without requiring constant passive surveillance.
- PERS: Personal Emergency Response System. These typically rely on proprietary hardware, such as dedicated pendants, watches, base stations, pr devoces that must be purchased, worn, carried and maintained in order for the service to function. These device-centric models contrast with app-based platforms that do not require proprietary equipment and can operate on existing consumer smartphones. Examples include, but are not limited to, Life Alert, Mobile Help, Medical Guardian, ADT, Lifeline, and Fonie. Fonie is a priced at $39.99 on Amazon (as of Jan. 25, 2026). PERS systems typically require a monthly subscription with pricing commonly ranging from $15.95 – $90 per month, with most averaging $50 per month. Some services may also require activation fees (reported up to approximately $197) and multi-year service contracts, in some cases extending up to three years.
- No User Interaction Required: Defined as requiring no phone call, button push, fall, or voice command for the system to initiate emergency escalation based on non-response.
- Code Word and/or Voice Activation: May initiate contact with emergency services (police or fire) or designated trusted individuals, depending on user configuration.
- Staffing-Independent Monitoring: Monitoring does not depend on call centers or on-duty staff, avoiding delays and coverage gaps associated with staffing shortages.
- Home Security System Integration: Integrates with home security and camera systems, i.e. “nanny cams,” to identify prolonged inactivity or anomalous behavior patterns and initiate alerts.
- Internet of Things (IoT) integration refers to connectivity with internet-enabled household devices such as smart appliances (refrigerators, ovens, washers/dryers), smart beds, i.e. Tempurpedic and scales, lighting systems, and other internet connected home equipment capable of sending status data or responding to automated alerts.
- Search and Rescue Coordination: Provides emergency responders with last known location, responsiveness status, and critical mobility or evacuation limitations (e.g., bedridden, disabled, dependent care), to support prioritization during large-scale emergencies such as fires, storms, or disasters. Life360 may assist indirectly through location sharing and emergency dispatch; it does not coordinate search and rescue operations.
**Automated 911 Integration: Defined as the platform’s ability to automatically interface with 911 or public safety answering points (PSAPs) without requiring the user to place a phone call.
Medicine
Medicine within Life Backup Plan is designed to give healthcare providers a more complete, longitudinal view of a person’s health, rather than a series of disconnected snapshots taken at individual appointments. By enabling individuals to maintain and share core medical information, including conditions, medications, allergies, care instructions, and relevant history, the Interoperable Lifecare Platform helps clinicians establish context more quickly, narrow diagnostic possibilities sooner, and reduce repetition. This fuller picture can support more efficient care planning, fewer appointments, and lower downstream costs associated with transportation, parking, copays, childcare, time off work, and avoidable prescriptions, to name a few.
In emergency and urgent-care settings, where providers often have little or no prior information about a patient, access to baseline health data can be especially impactful. When medical history is unavailable, clinicians must frequently test broadly to rule out unknowns; having immediate access to verified personal health information allows decision-makers to focus evaluations and respond more effectively. Over time, the platform is intended to support continuity by preserving key records, including prior imaging and diagnostic context, so that future care decisions are informed by what is already known, rather than starting from zero each time.
- Digital Patient Intake Form™ consolidates standard healthcare intake information, including medical history, medications, allergies, vaccinations, surgical history, family and social history, current conditions, healthcare providers, and preferred pharmacies—securely accessible when needed.
- Personal Health Information Sharing allows users to prioritize their contacts and control to whom information is shared, when, and on a line-by-line basis. Each contact sees only what you authorize, when you authorize it, for each check on.
- HIPAA compliance is self-certifying. That said, Life Backup Plan is designed to support HIPAA-aligned data handling, encryption at rest + in transit, staff training, with formal certification planned s part of our HITRUST certification.
- HITRUST Certification: a rigorous, risk-based security framework that validates an organization’s data protection controls by harmonizing 60+ standards, including HIPAA, ISO 27001, and NIST. It requires third-party validation to confirm that policies, procedures, and controls meet stringent, industry-specific requirements across 19 domains. Organizations which accept HITRUST and Vendor Directory
- Legal and Medical Document Location: Location only, i.e. who has possession of documents like Advance directive, Do Not Resuscitate Order (DNR), Advanced Director, Durable Healthcare Power of Attorney, Power of Attorney (POA), Living Will, Final Wishes. Personal Property Memorandum, Trust, Estate Plan, Charitable Remainder Trust, Pet Trust, and other legal and medical documents which may govern care and/or end-of-life decisions.
- EHR Integration: Electronic Health Records Systems, includes Epic, Cerner, Follow my Health, Oracle Health, myChart, HEALOW, and Praxis.
- Electronic Signature Integration: integration with eSignature systems like DocuSign, Hello Sign, Conga Sign, Zoho Sign, and more.
- Direct Fax Capability: Since the United States healthcare system is still heavily reliant upon Fax machines, due, in part, to HIPAA and compliance regulations, Life Backup Plan intends to make it possible to fax medical history, symptom and wellness tracking, and other personal health information directly to hospitals, doctor’s offices, physical therapy, home health care, wound care, and more, so people who do not have a landline and/or fax machine in their home are able to conveniently send and receive fax communications from their healthcare providers.
- Secure Medical Documet Storage: secured storage of Advanced Directive, Durable Healthcare Power of Attorney, Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) order, and other medical documents governing care or end-of-life for faster access by healthcare workers and family members during medical emergencies and health decision making points.
- Secured Legal Document Storage: secured storage of Living Will, Estate Plan, Trust, Charitable Remainder Trust, Pet Trust, Personal Property Memorandum, Accounts and Passwords list, and other critical documents for faster access by family members during stressful decision making points.
- Final Wishes Storage: secured storage of funeral and/or memorial service plans and requests, pet disposition, music, family member, pet and favorite places visits prior to death, and other final wishes, to ease end-of-life stress for person and their family and friends.
- Medication Reminders: reminders not just to take medications, but to log the time and dosage the medication was taken in Life Backup Plan, so that this data may be used in conjunction with medical history, symptoms, wellness and lifestyle tracking to provide healthcare workers a fuller picture of your health, in case a problem arises. Also guards against forgetfulness, and reminds people if they have missed a dosage.
- Proactive Health Reminders: reminders to get age appropriate mammogram, well woman exam, prostate exam, annual physical, colonoscopy, dentist, blood work, thyroid tests, annual eye exam, mamongst others, to further early detection and prevention efforts.
- Digital Triage and Escalation Logic: AI (Artificial Intelligence) enabled decision-support capability designed to help users assess urgency and prioritize next steps, with the goal of reducing unnecessary emergency room utilization and associated costs. Includes symptom severity categorization, contact prioritization, and escalation logic to support informed decisions about whether immediate emergency response may be appropriate or whether follow-up with a primary care provider or specialist may be considered. This functionality is intended for informational and support purposes only and does not provide medical advice or diagnosis.
Metrics
Metrics within Life Backup Plan focus on capturing and organizing person-level data that helps clinicians and caregivers understand health patterns over time, rather than relying solely on isolated, point-in-time encounters. Lifestyle and wellness tracking, symptom reporting, and patient-entered observations provide continuity between visits and across care settings, which is particularly important for high-acuity patients managing complex or evolving conditions. This approach is also highly relevant in rural health applications, where access to providers may be limited and longitudinal insight can significantly influence care decisions.
By combining personal health history with ongoing lifestyle, wellness, and symptom data and, over time, integrating information from smartwatches and medical devices, the Interoperable Lifecare Platform is designed to support more informed decision-making and earlier recognition of potential risk patterns. Predictive health risk analysis is intended to augment clinical judgment by surfacing meaningful changes or trends that may warrant attention, helping providers focus evaluations, reduce unnecessary appointments, and prioritize care more effectively. For patients, this can translate into a better overall experience, including fewer visits, less time spent navigating the healthcare system, lower indirect costs, and reduced disruption to daily life.
- Lifestyle and Wellness Tracking: tracking of food, beverage, medications, mood, environmental factors, sleep and activity, to be used in conjunction with medical history and other items on the digital patient intake form to help providers better deduce the cause of the primary complaint and, hopefully, reduce the number of appointments needed, imaging, and lab tests, and associated copays and costs thereof.
- Symptom tracking: tracking of pain, rash, headaches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, shortness of breath, numbness, tingling, mobility issues, and other symptoms, along with frequency and severity, to give healthcare providers a more robust picture of someone’s health.
- Smart Watch Integration: includes integration with brands like Apple, Garmin, Samsung, Google (Pixel), Fitbit, Amazfit, Huawei, Coros, Whoop, Withings, CMF by Nothing, OnePlus, and Mobvoi (Ticwatch) for provide activity, sleep, and other data to the lifestyle and wellness functionality of the Life Backup Plan app.
- Medical Device Integration: integration with Oura, heart rate monitors, glucose monitors, CPAP machines, BiPAP machines, blood pressure monitors, bone growth stimulators, pulse oximeters, insultin pump, electrocardiography (ECG) Devices. and pacemakers, for example. Life Backup Plan senses anomalies and can alert the wearer or emergency contacts, possibly preventing a medical emergency or death and giving healthcare workers additional data points to enable them to better help their patients.
- Predictive Health Risk Analysis: an AI (Artificial Intelligence) – enabled decision-support functionality that aggregates user-provided personal health information from the Digital Patient Intake Form™ with lifestyle, wellness, and symptom tracking data, as well as information from supported medical devices, smartwatches, and fitness trackers. The platform synthesizes these data points to identify patterns and trends and to surface topics and considerations the user may wish to discuss with their healthcare provider. This functionality is intended to support proactive health conversations and awareness and does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment recommendations.
Membership
Membership within Life Backup Plan reflects the reality that most people are already members of multiple communities: family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, professional groups, faith communities, schools, or informal networks formed around shared experience. These connections play a significant role in how people access information, receive support, and navigate health, safety, and daily life challenges. By enabling structured ways to request or offer assistance, share guidance, and connect with trusted individuals, the platform is designed to strengthen community ties that are often critical but under-supported in traditional healthcare and emergency systems.
This community-based approach aligns closely with recognized social determinants of health, including social support, access to practical resources, and the ability to exchange knowledge and experience. Membership is not limited to requesting help; it also supports the sharing of insight, best practices, and lived experience that can meaningfully improve outcomes, from preparing for medical procedures, to managing recovery, to navigating environmental or situational challenges. By formalizing these connections in a respectful, opt-in framework, Life Backup Plan aims to make community knowledge and mutual support more accessible, reliable, and actionable when it matters most.
- Offer / Request Assistance Items: a matching service to borrow or lend, for example, knee roller, crutches, wheelchair, adult diapers, baby formula, shoulder brace, pet food, or any number of items. This feature is designed for short-term, situational needs—particularly in communities affected by isolation, limited mobility, or temporary supply disruptions.
- Offer / Request Personal Assistance: a matching service to offer or request, amongst many others, rides to doctor’s appointments, installation of a bar in a tub or shower, or help getting someone up off the floor if they’ve fallen out of bed. This feature is designed for short-term, situational needs.
- Offer / Request Healthcare Worker: a connection and matching feature intended for urgent, time-sensitive situations in which traditional emergency response services (such as ambulance, fire, or other public emergency services) may be delayed, unavailable, or unable to reach the user due to weather, geographic, or situational constraints. The platform facilitates the identification of nearby healthcare workers or trained responders who may voluntarily choose to respond. Any compensation, scope of assistance, or terms of engagement are arranged solely between the requesting user and the responding individual. Life Backup Plan does not employ, dispatch, credential, supervise, or provide medical direction to responders. This feature is intended for short-term emergency situations only and is not designed for ongoing, routine, or replacement medical care. Availability of responders is not guaranteed. This feature does not replace emergency services. Future versions of the platform may incorporate optional credential verification mechanisms; however, at present, responders self-identify their training or licensure, and users are responsible for determining whether to accept assistance.
- Platform Independent: Means Life Backup Plan is designed to function across modern smartphones regardless of manufacturer or operating system, without requiring users to purchase, upgrade to, or remain locked into any specific device ecosystem. This lowers cost barriers, supports long-term continuity of use, and ensures broader accessibility across diverse populations.
- Entity-independent access: Life Backup Plan operates without reliance on enrollment in, authorization from, or integration with any specific government, insurer, or employer-administered program. Core platform availability and functionality are not contingent upon participation in federal, state, county, city, or municipal programs, including Medicaid, Medi-Cal, Medicare, or U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA Health System) nor on eligibility determinations, coverage status, or employment.
- Emergency and Public Safety System Independent: Life Backup Plan does not require adoption, authorization, integration, or participation by public safety or emergency management agencies in order for users to access core safety-related platform functionality. Availability is not contingent upon implementation by federal, state, regional, or local emergency or public safety systems, including agencies such as Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) or state and local Offices of Emergency Services. Users may access core functionality regardless of jurisdictional participation or procurement decisions.
- Dependent Care Instructions: enables user to enter details of any child or adult dependent, including, but not limited to, school, pediatrician, allergies, medications, food sensitivities, favorite bedtime story, favorite pajamas, foster care agency and social worker, if applicable, age, principal, and babysitter. Eases transition in case the primary caregiver is unavailable and care needs to be provided by a babysitter, family member or friend.
- Pet Care Instructions: enables user to enter details of any pet, such as age, veterinarian, favorite toy, food, medical conditions, name, special needs, pet rescue organization pet was acquired from, pet sitter, medications, and rules. Eases transition in case the pet parent is unable to care for the pet and needs to be cared for by pet sitter, family member or friend., or return to pet rescue organization, if the pet care needs to be longer term.
- Livestock and Crop Care Instructions: instructions for care of horses, cows, pigs, chickens, hogs, soybeans, corn and any other livestock or crop, in the event normal care is unavailable. Includes veterinarian, horticulturist, food, exercise, and any special needs. Eases transition to family member or friend.
Money
Money within Life Backup Plan is not limited to individual affordability, but reflects a broader effort to improve efficiency across the healthcare ecosystem. By reducing administrative friction, minimizing documentation and paperwork, and enabling information to move with the individual rather than being repeatedly re-collected, the platform is intended to help clinical practices, home healthcare providers, physical therapists, kidney dialysis centers and hospitals operate with fewer manual processes. This is especially relevant in an environment where healthcare staffing shortages, across physicians, nurses, and support staff, continue to strain capacity and limit access to care.
At the individual level, greater efficiency can translate into fewer appointments, reduced travel, lower indirect costs such as childcare and time away from work, and more targeted use of medications and diagnostics. At the system level, earlier identification of issues and better information continuity can help allocate scarce clinical resources more effectively, particularly in rural or underserved areas where delays in care can have serious consequences. The goal is not cost-cutting for its own sake, but a more sustainable model in which time, attention, and resources are focused where they are most needed: supporting access, responsiveness, and better patienet outcomes overall.
- Transparent, user-paid pricing: Life Backup Plan is currently offered under the Sapphire plan as a straightforward monthly subscription priced at $14.99 per month. Additional subscription tiers are planned, including higher-tier offerings intended to support expanded capabilities as they are developed and released.
- Included with compatible device at no additional cost. No separate subscription required. Requires ownership of a compatible smartphone and an active mobile phone carrier service plan. Availability and functionality may vary by device model, operating system, region, and user configuration.
